Need To Look Higher

I so struggle with all that is going on in this world and in our nation today. The us/them and believer/non-believer rhetoric and the idea that we are a 'Christian' nation just rips me apart. I am a follower of Christ and, as a follower, I feel that I must do my best to adhere to the teachings of Jesus and yet there is such a conflict with what I believe and what I see around. Been going on with the idea of a Christian nation. If I follow what Jesus said I believe that a Christian nation would be one that looked out for others around them but instead we are more interested in what a politician will do for us personally in total disregard of those around us.

You Might Need A Coffee

You might want to grab a coffee and take a seat because this post might be a lengthy one. Yesterday I had the incredible privilege to provide some music at an event benefitting the family of one of my special friends. This young friend sat off the stage to the right of me and throughout the event I would glance over at her and see her incredible smile that reminded me of ALL that is important in life. I looked at the large number of people who were there to help make a handicap accessible addition to this family’s home a reality. People simply doing the right thing! Then I contrast it to what is going on in the world around me and find myself wishing that people everywhere could make choices about those around that would be made because it was the right thing to do. There are a few hot topics recently which have bothered me deeply.

Several have come out of the current race for the White House including so many discussions about being a Christian or Godly nation. I’m sorry but I see very little evidence to support this claim. I am a follower of Christ and as a follower I have tried to live my life in a way that impacts those around me in a positive way; in a way that lets them know that someone cares and, ultimately that God cares and loves them deeply. Some days I get it right. Jesus said, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you
love one another.” This is something that seems absent in so many of the political discussions. As I read the Bible, one of the most repeated phrases I hear is ‘Do not be afraid’, ‘do not fear’ or ‘fear not’ depending son what translation I am reading yet it seems that all I see in our ‘godly nation’ is fear and fearmongers. A Godly nation places it trust in God and not on man yet it appears that we feel we can elect someone to take God’s place.

I hear people speak of the curse of immigrants. Instead I have come to see it as being blessed to live in a country such as ours. One that held a promise of hope to our immigrant ancestors for, unless you are 100% Native American, your DNA ties you to immigrants.
